The performances were fine and the direction was top notch however, my initial opinion of the film was that it was disappointing. I think it's because i expected it to be a typical Hitchcock film, which meant there was a murder, an investigation, and suspense. Rebecca did have two of those elements, murder and an investigation, but it lacked suspense. The pacing was too slow, surprisingly. Also there was too much attention given to the relationship between Joan Fontaine's character and Laurence Olivier's character. They were boring. I thought that there were many more interesting characters and relationships that were ignored. The best example is the creepy housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, brilliantly acted by Judith Anderson. It is revealed that she admired Rebecca to the point of stalker-like obsession.
Beefing up her character, and more time devoted to the investigation, instead of the courtship would have made the film more interesting to me. But, what do i know, i think it is loved by many critics.
